Honolulu, Hawai‘i – (October 14, 2011) - Papakolea Community Development Corporation presented the community with an early Christmas gift on October 8 with the dedication of the new Papakolea Commercial Kitchen. Hunt Building Company, Ltd. was general contractor for the project, which will serve as an incubator for food service and food manufacturing businesses headed by entrepreneurs from Papakolea.
“Hunt was thrilled to be a part of this important project,” said Bud Waters, Executive Vice President of Hunt Building Company. “Community members have been waiting for more than 15 years for this kitchen, and this dedication marks a big day for families in Papakolea as the kitchen offers a wide array of opportunities for area residents.”
Located in the Papakolea Community Center, the kitchen also provides service-learning opportunities for homestead youth as well as supports the operation of the Papakolea Community Center and Park. The kitchen is also used to run an afterschool concession stand for facility users, completely operated by community youth. Interested youth are also informed about the numerous opportunities at Kapiolani Community College’s (KCC) Culinary Arts program, where they can receive education in support services for the food businesses, including specialized training, product development, regulatory assistance and business development.
The Kahiau Foundation Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation provided a $298,000 grant to design and build the commercial kitchen. Hunt’s project management team worked closely with Ferraro Choi Architects to deliver a high-end, well equipped, professional commercial kitchen that will serve the Papakolea Community well.
In addition to this recent project, Hunt Building Company, Ltd, along with its team of subcontractors previously helped Habitat for Humanity construct a home for a Papakolea family.
